The living room, which from the center of the house, has floor or square off-white tiles,
white walls, magnolia colored curtains and tan upholstered cane furniture. This rather neutral background sets beautifully some casually placed rugs and a small ornate Jammu chest from Indonesia. Jammu is medicine that women use “to make them beautiful from the inside”. Above the chest are few page of a Burmese lacquered manuscript.
Much of the charm of this room lies in its odd corners, a result of the alternations. Their doors lead to bed rooms. The master bedroom is dominated by the low double bed with headboard made from a Chinese settee. The two bedside lamps are fashioned from green Chinese pottery pillows. The bed cover is Javanese batik. The owner has chosen the most pleasing and most Asian window covering; bamboo blinds which so agreeably filter the light. Purple orchids provide a fresh splash of color. For comfort, the bedrooms are fully carpeted and air conditioned.
A glance at the house and garden lets you realize instantly the owner attractions for Asia, its art and its people.
The lady of the house will have caught up with you on your wanderings by now, probably after putting on some Malay or Indonesian music, and her warmth as well at the charm of her home embraced you comfortably as you settle down for prolonged chat.
